Anatomy

The parts of a hang tag, from hole to edge

Every tag we print is built from the same five parts. Knowing their names makes a quote faster, because you can tell us exactly what you want.

Each part is a decision you make once and then reorder without thinking. Our guide to strings, pins and loops for attaching tags covers the last step in more detail.

  1. Hole and grommet. A punched hole near the top. A metal grommet rings it so the string cannot tear through the card.
  2. String. Cotton, jute, satin ribbon or an elastic loop. We can tie it on before the tags ship.
  3. Front face. Your logo or brand name. This is the side a shopper sees on the rack.
  4. Back face. Price, care notes, sizing or a short line about how the item was made.
  5. Stock thickness. Measured in points. A 14 pt tag bends easily, and a 32 pt tag stands stiff on its string.
Thickness

Stock thickness, from 14 pt to 32 pt

One point is a thousandth of an inch. A 16 pt tag is 0.016 inches thick, close to a sturdy business card.

Thicker card holds its shape on a busy rack and takes foil and embossing better. Thin card suits small tags, sale tags and anything you write on by hand.

Not sure which to pick? Leave the stock blank on the quote form and we will suggest one for your product.

Papers and finishes you can combine

The stock sets the base color and texture. The finish changes how light hits the surface and how the tag feels between two fingers.

Mix them freely. A kraft tag with white ink and a pressed logo reads very differently from the same design on laminated white card. Our soft-touch silk laminated tags show one of the quieter combinations.

Notes from the print room

Planning a hang tag, one decision at a time

What a hang tag does that a sticker label cannot

A hang tag hangs from the product on a string, loop or pin. It never touches the fabric, the glass or the finish, and it comes off clean at home.

Because it swings free, people pick it up and turn it over. That gives you two faces to print: your brand on the front, and care notes, sizing or a short story on the back.

Our range covers every hang tag shape we cut, plus sale tags, shipping tags and bottle neckers on the same stocks.

  • Clothing and accessories hanging on a rack
  • Candles, soaps and jars sold at markets
  • Bottles of oil, syrup or sauce that need a necker
  • Gift items where the tag doubles as a small card

Choosing a tag size from the product outward

Start with the item, not the logo. A tag should read at arm's length without hiding the thing it describes.

Small jars and jewelry often suit a tag near 1.5 x 2 inches. Apparel usually needs more room, around 2 x 3.5 inches, and a folded tag doubles the space without doubling the footprint.

Leave a clear margin around the punched hole, since a grommet takes up more room than a plain punch. Our hang tag sizes guide by product lists common measurements with notes on hole placement.

Card thickness and how a tag feels in the hand

Thickness is the first thing a shopper notices when they pinch a tag. We print on 14 pt, 16 pt, 18 pt, 24 pt and 32 pt cardstock.

Our thickest tags are two sheets laminated together. They stand stiff on the string and can take painted edges.

For natural or handmade goods, look at kraft board, uncoated textured stock or recycled-content stock. Our brown kraft tags with white ink show how a plain board can carry a brand.

Ink, foil and texture on each side of the tag

You can print one side or both, in full color CMYK or matched Pantone inks. On kraft or dark stock, white ink keeps a logo bright.

Finishes change the touch as much as the look. Soft-touch lamination feels velvety, while foil stamping and spot UV catch shop lighting.

Embossing and debossing add a raised or pressed logo you can feel with a thumb. Read about which paper and finish pairs work before you lock in a combination.

Strings, grommets and who ties them

Most tags get a punched hole, with or without a metal grommet to stop the string tearing through. Cotton string, jute, satin ribbon, elastic loops, safety pins and plastic loop pins are all options.

We can pre-attach strings, so the tags arrive ready to hang. That takes a slow job off your packing table.

Bottles need a different fit. Our custom bottle neckers for jars and bottles use a die-cut neck hole sized to your bottle.

What to have ready before you ask for a price

Small brands, bakeries, online sellers, boutiques and makers order from us. The quickest quotes come from buyers who send these details up front.

If you are unsure about the copy, our guide on what to put on a hang tag walks through each line.

  1. The tag size in inches, or the product it will hang on
  2. Your preferred stock and finish, or a request for our suggestion
  3. The attachment, and if strings should arrive pre-attached
  4. The quantity and the date you need tags in hand
  5. Your logo file or finished artwork
